Overall GrubGrade B-

The Breakdown:

Atmosphere:  Grade C:  River City Café was the victim of poor weather on the evening we visited.  A monsoon-like rainstorm had left the patio area completely soaked.  No big deal to us, right?  I mean, as previously mentioned, we don’t usually eat outside anyway.  But, everyone’s rain soaked footwear mixed nicely with the peanut carcasses on the floor to make a nice, slippery, peanut-paste.  It was a little gross.  Of course, River City Café can’t control the weather, but they can control the peanuts.  Inside, River City’s walls are adorned with thousands of license plates.  For those of us who can read, it provides a distraction from the wait and the cramped quarters.  River City Café was pretty much deserted when we arrived, but a break in the rain brought all the hungry folks out.  The place got really crowded and really noisy very quickly.  A visit on a different night would probably yield a better vibe.

High marks:  License plates on walls a nice distraction

Low marks:   Messy, crowded, and loud

Service:  Grade B:   Ray, our server, did a pretty nice job with our service considering the circumstances.  The service was a little slow, but the place got packed really quickly, so that’s understandable.  Once food started to arrive, the meal flowed pretty well.  We did have a bit of a wait to receive our entrees, but that was really the only delay.  However, there were mistakes made, so we must mention them.  Katina and I ordered different burgers, but we both got the same burger delivered to the table (the one I ordered).  This was a little frustrating considering the initial wait, but once we pointed out the mistake, Ray quickly had the kitchen fix the error.  A few minutes later, and the correct burger makes its way to the table.  We commend the staff on quickly fixing their mistake.

High marks:  Decent service, mistakes corrected in a timely fashion

Low marks:   A little slow, and mistakes made with order

Food/Spirits:  Grade B-:  Katina and I didn’t slug any cocktails or beer at River City Café since we had the kids in tow, so there is no need to mention the spirits here.  As for the food, our burgers were decent, but nothing awe-inspiring.  I ordered the Surf N Turf burger (I promise, this is the last burger I’ll review for a while), which is a cheeseburger with breaded shrimp on top.  It was okay, but I wasn’t really impressed.  I do need to mention that the must have some really good hot dogs, because our daughter, Morgan, finished hers so fast I initially thought they forgot to bring it out – and this was a big dog.  I’ve seen other reviews that indicate a funny taste to the fountain soft drinks, but we didn’t notice anything on our visit.

High marks:  Damn good hotdog, I guess

Low marks:  Burgers were mediocre

Value:  Grade B-:   The food was really inexpensive, and we spent less at River City Café than at any other place we visited (with the exception of fast food joints).  But the quality just wasn’t good enough to warrant anything in the “A” range.  Add the initial slow service and dining conditions, and we end up with a “B-.”  You can probably do worse than River City Café, but I’m betting you could also do better.

High marks:   Inexpensive food

Low marks:   Quality indicative of price
